Active Release Technique

Where assessment and treatment come together

Active Release Technique at SANO Physio, Paddington.

The science behind the ART

As the name suggests, Active Release Technique (ART) is a treatment that involves input from both you and your physio. Used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal issues and improve performance, it targets specific areas where you may feel tension, pain and reduced range of motion.

Based on the theory that scar tissue can build up in your muscles, tendons, fascia and ligaments from overuse and injury, A.R.T uses a combination of applied pressure and movement to break down the scar tissue and restore function. Your physiotherapist will find ‘tight’ points, apply pressure and ask you to move your body to lengthen the muscle while while pressure is maintained.

When is ART used?

Active Release Technique may be recommended in your physiotherapy treatment plan. ART can help with a wide range of injuries, including:

  • Muscle Strains and Sprains

  • Tendinitis

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Headaches

  • Back Pain

  • Sciatica

  • Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Beyond injury, ART can help performance through aiding full range of motion and restoring full function and performance to affected soft tissues. This process can result in significant increases in sports performance of power, strength, and flexibility.

The key elements of Active Release Technique

  • ART needs your input. Unlike passive therapies, ART actively involves the patient in the treatment process. Through specific movements and targeted tension, patients play an active role in releasing adhesions, promoting flexibility, and restoring normal tissue function.

  • ART gets to the point. Active release technique is highly precise, targeting the affected area with a combination of precisely directed tension and specific patient movements.

This precision allows for the breakdown of scar tissue and the restoration of optimal tissue texture and function.

  • ART is in the eye (well, the body) of the beholder. Before initiating Active Release Technique, a thorough examination is conducted to identify the exact location and nature of soft tissue restrictions. This diagnostic precision ensures that the treatment is tailored to address your specific needs.

  • ART takes many forms. Active release technique is effective in addressing a spectrum of conditions, including muscle tightness, joint dysfunction, nerve entrapments, and overuse injuries. It is particularly beneficial for athletes seeking to enhance performance by optimising muscle function and range of motion.
