Running Assessment

Taking it all in your stride.

Running Assessment at SANO Physio, Paddington.

Your first step to optimal running

Looking to improve your running? Working with runners is a key specialisation at SANO Physio, in partnership with Run Pure (in fact we offer a complete running transformation service Reshape). We’ve helped hundreds of runners recover from injury, build a strong body, improve running technique and reach personal bests.

A Running Assessment is where we look at your body type, the way you move, the forces that go through your body and the mechanics that assist your running.

This is suitable for runners that are:

  • recently injured,

  • have had recurrent injuries,

  • need some direction with their running,

  • want to improve their technique or move more efficiently

  • build strength in the right areas

  • increase speed and want to make sure they are doing it safely

Many of us were taught to swim, or taught how to ride a bike. But how many of us can say we were taught to run? Even many of us who have already achieved great things in running! This is the opportunity.

A Running Assessment allows us to watch and record how your body moves while you run. Using high speed video we can capture your biomechanics and give you advice on the best running technique for you, so you can increase efficiency while addressing underlying risks of pain or injury.

What does a Running Assessment include?

  • Analyzing how the foot contacts the ground during each stride (heel strike, midfoot strike, or forefoot strike).

  • Assessing the number of steps per minute to determine if the runner's cadence is within an optimal range for efficiency and injury prevention.

  • Examining the distance covered with each stride to ensure it is appropriate for your build and running goals.

  • Evaluating the overall posture, alignment of the head, shoulders, hips, and knees to identify any deviations from a neutral position.

  • Checking the range of motion and stability of joints, particularly the ankles, knees, and hips, to identify potential areas of concern.

  • :Assessing muscle engagement and identifying any imbalances or weaknesses that may contribute to running-related issues.

  • Examining the wear patterns on running shoes to gain insights into the distribution of forces during running.

  • We’ll ask you about where you typically run, as different surfaces can impact gait mechanics and injury risk.

After Your Assessment

Once we’ve seen how you move, the aim is get you moving better. We can usually do this during the first session through a number of strategies including posture cueing, cadence manipulation, drilling, exercise activation and more.

After you’ve competed your Running Assessment, we will give you advice on treatment and exercise to correct any issues or to improve your performance. This may include physiotherapy treatment, massage, active release therapy, joint mobilisation, strength and mobility exercises, and an individualised running program - all designed to optimise your running form, reduce the risk of injuries and enhance your overall performance.
